Nintendo's GameCube was a real game-changer when it was released on September 14, 2001 (Japan). It was Nintendo's first console that used optical discs as storage devices, those that are similar to miniDVDs. But the compartment was small and hence could not play the regular CDs or DVDs. The console also supported online gaming via the modem and connected to the Game Boy Advance that gave its user exclusive unlocks.

The console received huge praise, especially for the great and high-quality games, and its extremely user-friendly controller. This allowed Nintendo to sell about  21.74 million units worldwide. Sadly the console was discontinued in the year 2007 with the Wii taking over as the flagship console.
