10 things you should know before you turn 20

Thus begins the best phase of your life. Kyoko Escamilla once said “Your 20s are your selfish years. It’s a decade to immerse yourself in every single thing possible. Be selfish with your time, and all the aspects of you. Tinker with shit, travel, explore, love a lot, love a little and never touch the ground.” Here’s some life wisdom you should know before you enter your 20s.

1. On Love

Love is important and don’t ever let anyone tell you that it’s not. The endless songs that remind you that love is all you need or love makes the world go round are not wrong. True love uplifts you, inspires you and betters you in ways you wouldn’t have ever imagined. It’s a blessing and you should never close your heart to it, no matter how much it hurts. Yes your career, your ambitions, your own life is important as well but don’t forget oh sweet love amidst them. It’s the best feeling when you have your own little sanctuary in someone. Go on, ask your crush out before it’s too late.

2. On Indulgence

If you don’t eat that brownie even when your heart wants nothing more, you’re making a big mistake. Eat it, if you’re worried about the extra calories that you’ve gained then work out later but don’t make your heart sad. Indulge it. Eat good food, read good stuff, take frequent getaways. You are not meant to live a strict life full of rules.

3. On other people

Why do you hang out with people who drag you down? Why do you go to parties and then hate every minute of it? The size of your social circle doesn’t matter squat, but what matters is the quality of people you surround yourself with. Just be with people who make you happy and don’t be afraid to say ‘No’ when those negative people ask you to ‘hang out’. Life’s too short, my love.

4. On Failures

To be honest, most of the failures arise when you start comparing yourself with others. “How did she get the job and I didn’t, I have failed myself, I have brought dishonor to my brain, I suck!” are the thoughts that come in the brain while crying in the shower. Let it go, stop giving a shit. So you didn’t get the job? You’ll get a better one.

5.On Achievements

Achievements are good, they give you a high but what you must do at that time is remain humble. Yes, stay grounded and keep the people who helped you achieve what you did super close. Also be ready to shell out thousands in giving ‘treats’ to other people.

6. On Learning

This is one thing you must never ever stop doing. Try to listen to people. Watch talk shows and just soak in the success stories of people. You will learn loads from everyone if you just listen. Be a wallflower. Also read a lot. Books will expand your mind like never before.

7. On Your Body

Sit naked in front of the mirror once in a while and just try to love yourself. So you’re a bit extra hairy, or a little less hairy, or fat, or short, or too skinny, or dark skinned? OWN IT. Love each part of yourself. Honey I know it’s tough, I know loving yourself is tough. But you have to try, every day and one day you’ll get there.

8. On Art

Create art. There are so many mediums to create art. Sing, dance, play an instrument, click pictures, write, paint, do stand up comedy, just do something. Even if you choose not to publish your art, you need to create to have an outlet for your feelings.

9. On Good TV

It’s important as hell. Don’t live your life without watching at least some of the ‘must watch shows’. They teach you as well as entertain you. Go start Friends today, or Game of Thrones, or HIMYM, or Sense8, or House of Cards, or OITNB. Netflix and chill, bro.

10. On Experiences

Make some good memories. Jump into a waterfall with your friends, get shitfaced drunk with your cousins and dance like a maniac. Make your days count. Have some great experiences, you can work later.
